The portable digital radio station for classical music fans

KUSC Los Angeles and KDFC San Francisco are the two largest 24/7 classical music broadcasters in California, operated by USC Radio Group for over 77 years. To evolve from traditional broadcasting into a modern digital radio station, the organization aimed to make its content accessible anytime and from any device. The goal was to create seamless digital experiences for audiences in both Northern and Southern California while preserving the essence of classical radio.
To support this transformation, the IDAP team handled full-cycle radio development, delivering iOS, Android, and web applications that act as digital twins of the stations. The resulting radio mobile app solutions enable over 60,000 daily listeners to stream content through a modern digital mobile radio experience.
Over five years, the team modernized legacy architecture, transformed the backend, and migrated the web platform from Angular and Prism CMS to React and Contentful CMS. The project demonstrates how to create radio mobile app solutions at scale and serves as a practical example for organizations exploring how to start a digital radio station in today’s multi-platform environment.
